“Your Balls Are Next” | 2024 Summer Challenge Quilt

This post was written by Christine Economos, one of our guild members.

The guild’s summer challenge was to make a quilt with words—something meaningful. I had some clever ideas--nothing inspiring. Then I saw “Suffs,” a Broadway musical about women’s suffrage. It was really good; I enjoyed it. It made my blood boil.

I thought, “One hundred years later and we’re STILL fighting for our rights?” Our reproductive rights are being stripped away. There are states where pregnant women in crises are refused treatment. These women suffer mental and physical anguish; some die. Is this really happening today in this country? What next? Are they going to find a way to track our menstrual cycles?

I don’t know where men are on this issue. Do they think it’s a women’s thing that has little to do with them? Hey Guys? Think again. Your reproductive rights are not firmly protected either. It may sound like a threat, but it's just a warning: Your Balls Are Next.

My quilt got a round of applause at our fall meeting. I was encouraged to make tee-shirts. I wear mine a lot. I get different reactions: Men cringe; women smile and give me the thumbs up.
